Rectal Prolapse
It is nothing but the Rectum (stool storing part) comes out through the anus. Patient think that it is piled and try the conservative treatment on it
It is of two types :
Partial Rectal Prolapse
Complete Rectal Prolapse
Signs and Symptoms :
Most of the time patient does not have any symptom except something coming out of an anus. Other signs and symptoms may be mucus discharge, sometimes bleeding incontinence or obstruction due to prolapse may cause intestinal obstruction in which patient suffer severe abdominal pain vomiting, gaseous distension and constipation.
Investigation :
Clinical examination is sufficient to diagnose the condition
Treatment :
It is generally seen more commonly in females older age. Also seen in males.
Conservative treatment can be given to patients who have minimal signs and symptoms
- Patients having medical disease who are unfit for anesthesia or surgery
- Conservative management includes dietary adjustments such as to prevent constipation e.g. high fiber diet ,sto softener etc.
Surgical management there are more than 50 types of surgical procedures explained to treat it. Out of that which is best is still a debate
- Aim os surgery is to restore normal anatomy and to minimize symptoms without damaging anal sphincters. It can be performed by the abdominal or perineal approach. Procedure for rectal prolapse involves fixation of bowel (rectopexy) and if the necessary reaction of bowel (a portion of the bowel) is removed or both. Another approach is through anal canal (end anal)
